This might sound a bit amateur...

Ok, I had to edit this completely. I downloaded apache and Im on windows xp. I have it for the nt kernel.

Do i need to register a domain first? if not, how would i set my domain?
I am on verizon dsl (sucks) is there anything I have to do?

How would I get my site out there...do i store it on my pc or what?

Sorry, Ive tried reading tutorials and they just confused the hell out of me.

I am the webmaster at http://zeldalegacy.vzz.net/ and I have no mysql for hostultra (they suck as well). I wanted a domain and someone told me to get apache. Im so lsot it isnt even funny.

Could someone please help me or point me in the right direction??

I also have no clue after searching for hours through the directory and faqs how to display html / php files. WHere do they get placed ??

So, you want to host your own website?

This isn't particularly easy for a number of reasons!

Firstly, you'll need a computer that can be left on 24/7 and should, ideally, be dedicated to serving web pages. Now, while you don't need Apache, you will need a web server of some kind, such as IIS, Apache, etc.

You will need to consider security very seriously, both with your filesystem and your internet connection. As such you'll need a good firewall and the technical knowledge of how to setup your filesystem for hosting.

You obviously need a broadband connection and one that, ideally, has lots of upstream bandwidth and won't cause you hassle everytime somebody hits a webpage.

You're also going to need a lot of time and dedication as things can easily go wrong and you'll need to figure out why and fix them.

Most of the time, hosting your own website is a complete headache and so most people opt to use a hosting company. No offence here, but if you don't know what Apache is, or how to use it, or indeed that there is a Windows-equivalent of Apache (IIS), then you really don't know enough to attempt this.

If your whole reason for hosting your own website is that your host doesn't support MySQL, then switch host! There are many out there that support MySQL.

Thanks, I think Im gonna give it up for now. Might as well pay 5 dollars and get mysql on a host. I dont nearly have the upload speed for that.
