Password/Members Only areas
Hello,
I'm a new member to the forum and I have been called on to revamp a website and they want a separate password only members area established. I am using only Frontpage 2002 as the tool for the revamp. Can I also use this tool to create a password only protected members area, and if so, how? If not, what additional resources would I need? I can create simple sites but I'm a novice at creating E-Commerce and Password or Chat areas for a site. Please reply to this or e-mail me at: stevengara@hotmail.com with any good suggestions. Thanks, Steve |

If your server has the Frontpage extensions installed you can password protect areas using Frontpage 2002. See http://www.at-frontpage.com/2002/password.htm and http://www.msfrontpage.net/fp/protect.htm
There's also a number of other free scripts on the web to handle this for you using PHP, JSP, or ASP. E-commerce and chat are more complex subjects. |

hello. I was wondering could anyone tell me how to make a password protected area so that no one can go my logined pages without logging in. I use a geocities free site. Until I get some money. THX!!!!
P.S. Can anyone send me a javascript code for a login box. I need the login box to say Username, Password, register button, submit button. Thx. One last request through, the box will also need to have a trigger that sends the user an validation e-mail to add their username and password to the login directory. Thx!!! |

You won't be able to have a "login" system on geocities.
Anyone can bypass a javascript login. Since it's client scripting, I can look at the code and hack through it. |

Yes, Javascript isn't even slightly secure and can easily be hacked. It also can't send e-mails.
In order to do any of those things you need a server-side scripting language like CGI, ASP, PHP, etc. |

Yeah, JavaScript can set up the email very easily, just your user is gonna have to click send... But this doesn't work for everyone, because a lot of people's defualt mail server isn't the one they use, or if they use hotmail then it errors and gives you problems. All it does is it opens up the user's default email and fill in the different sections.
But you will have to learn a Server-Side language to do the password thing. Learn ASP or PHP. They will help you accomplish what you need. |

Ok, Amari, you're really looking into something that would take you years to learn.
No offence here, but do you even know HTML? You don't have to know HTML to do a Geocities webpage, but in order to do anything more complicated you do... So if you don't know HTML, I suggest you start there, but bear in mind that ASP and PHP are about 10 times harder - This isn't a walk in the park. |

It depends what you've already done....
I would say probably ASP, especially if you have windows 2000 or windows xp pro. But there are good points and bad points to each one. |

Amari, you're are jumping way too far ahead of yourself.
Slow down. Learn XHTML and CSS first. And javascript is always good to play around with before you get into PHP and ASP stuff... Also, the only reason why I would suggest PHP over ASP, is because you're going to have to pay a lot more for ASP. If you're lucky you can find a free PHP host, but your chances are slim. In other words, you'll basically need to buy hosting if you want to use PHP or ASP. Or of course you could setup a localhost... But I always found that to be a fairly complicated process for someone new to the game |

Why would you have to pay more for ASP? I dont.. I pay the same... but my server can run PHP and ASP so [:P]

Because you have to pay more for a Windows Server...
Linux = Free Windows = $$$ |
