Rollovers don't work until Quicktime completely downloads!?!
Hello all -
I'm developing a FREE movie website ( see: http://www.idriveinmovie.com ) The problem is that the rollover buttons on the web page won't function until the Quicktime movie file on the page is completely downloaded. This problem persists regardless of how the Quicktime files are exported when created. Although the pages work fine with Safari and Explorer on the Mac, it does NOT in Firefox on the Mac or PC. It also does NOT work in Explorer on the PC. I'm wondering if there's something specific with Firefox that I should be aware of in regards to coding the web pages. If anyone has any ideas I'd like to hear them. Thanks! |

I tested the link you provided on a PC and the rollovers seemed fine on IE 7 and Firefox 2.0 (Vista). It loaded in .654 seconds in Firefox. The rollovers seemed to be OK

Re: Rollovers don't work until Quicktime completely downloads!?!
Did you test a page to see if the rollovers were visibly functioning while a Quicktime movie was in the process of downloading?
For example this page: http://www.idriveinmovie.com/bltrailer_medium.htm The problem with the rollovers may have to do with the "onload" JS command in the body tag, which I believe instructs the browser to wait until the page has downloaded before it loads the preload images. If anyone knows how I can get around this, that would be great! Last edited by Alcivar; Apr 17th, 2007 at 15:39. |

No, I did not have that URL before and did not know which one to click.
The rollovers (menu) did not work until the movie was loaded... Have you considered using a different menu - like SuckerFish or Brothercake to see if that would work? |

Re: Rollovers don't work until Quicktime completely downloads!?!
OK, I'll check into these. I know the JS I'm using is probably heavy clumsy etc. It was generated automatically in Adobe ImageReady which I used with Photoshop to design the buttons. If I had to write that code myself I couldn't. Since I'm not really a coder but a graphic designer who puts together websites with the asistance of WYSIWYG programs like Dreamweaver although I can code a basic html site with no asistance.

Re: Rollovers don't work until Quicktime completely downloads!?!
I'm now converting some QT files into Flash FLV files. So far the pages I've converted do not exhibit these problems and many people have reported suddenly being able to see the videos whereas before they could not. For example see this page:
http://www,idriveinmovie.com/bltrailer_medium.htm When encoded properly, a flv file can compare to the quicktime format in quality while decreasing it's size by about 50% and the JS used to access the file for the webpage seems to handle the caching of the page data differently than the Quicktime embed tag so that the buttons work fine as the flv downloads, which of course is a solution to my original problem. Although Quicktime is my favorite video media, for internet delivery without a streaming server it seems the Flash FLV is the smarter choice right now. |
