My top picks are definitely wordpress and movable type. Brilliant. Though you could always make your own, don't think they're too difficult from what I've heard. Saying that, I've never bothered.

Yes ... I used php. No knowledge at all
 Seriously! I bought a book that had examples of admin sections and stuff like that. I had a VERY patient friend that thought be a whole lot. I just dove right in, asked a $hitload of questions. I'm always perfecting it. Finding new ways to do things.

Blogs yeah, they are not all that hard to develop...just get a good book, or find a good tutorial...it is a great way to improve your skills as a designer, because you learn some basic PHP!!

Sorry, my mistake. I meant, can anyone recomend any good blogs for me to read on web design/build. Just looking for somewhere to get good regular info, other than just here, obviously! Anything of interest really.

Roger Johansson (sp?) at 456bereastreet.com is a fave of mine. As is Jason Santa Maria's blog but that just might be because I like to drool over the design - it's very nice.
There are others too, I just can't think of them. Pete.
