Red face Trying to get this sussed

Hi,

I am no 'techie' but, I'm cobbling together a site:
http://www.read-up-here.info/Index.html
For our Group's use.

I am told, by google, that my URL is:
"A URL to a file, please provide URL"
so, what am I doing wrong?

I believe that the "Index.html" shouldn't
be there but, how do I get rid of it and
still make the URL work on the 'Net?

Sorry to seem so dumb but ... desperate

Best Regards. David

Re: Trying to get this sussed

I went here::

https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/sitestatus

And inputted our site's URL (as above) and got the
result that I copied and pasted.

So, how do I get rid if the "Index.html" ?

Best Regards, David

Re: Trying to get this sussed

Oh ... you just have to put http://www.read-up-here.info in there.

Re: Trying to get this sussed

But, how do I get rid of the "Index.html" in my URL?

My site will not come up on the 'Net if I just type
http://www.read-up-here.info

So, what do I need to do, or not do?

Best Regards, David

Re: Trying to get this sussed

firstly verify your site...

secondly its not asking you to remove "index.html" it just says you have no sites in Google's index.

Re: Trying to get this sussed

The reason why people use index.xxx is to refrain from having to give a url like "http://www.read-up-here.info/Index.html" intead... you just give the domain name www.read-up-here.info and it should be automatically redirected to the default page set by your hosting provider.

You need to check with your hosting provider what is the "default" page. Sometimes it's default.html or index.htm (not .html). You can ask them to add index.html if they don't have it ... well obviously they don't 'cause I get the directory listing of your site which is not good at all. You should ask them to turn that off as well.

Re: Trying to get this sussed

Yes Dan, I am aware of that but, I cannot get the
site to 'Show' on the 'Net without the "Index.html"

Why is this?

I have other sites that don't have to have this
"Index.html" so, why does This one?

I just want to be able to use::

http://www.read-up-here.info

Without the "Index.html" so .... how??

Best Regards, David

Sorry if I am being a pain but, we all gotta
ask someone, if we don't KNOW ... right?

Re: Trying to get this sussed

Well ... they should listen. Especially to disable the directory listing. That's a big no-no and usually done by default.

Let us know how it goes.
